Reviews - What do our customers think?
 | A prayer primer Jan 18, 2006 |
My ladies Bible study has just started this book, so granted, I am not writing from the vantage point of having completed the whole thing. Still, I have to say this is probably the least challenging study guide I have ever read. There is a place for it, I'm sure -- I think it would be a great introductory guide to prayer and what the Bible has to say about it, but that's not what I was expecting when we chose it.
Here are a few questions taken directly from the book, at random, so you can gauge for yourself if the material is right for you:
(Ch. 5 - Two-way Conversation) 4. Proverbs 30:5 states: "Every word of God is pure." But can words written down centuries ago be relevant now. [sic] How can they be considered part of a conversation we're having now? 5. How does 1 Thessalonians 2:13 describe the Word of God?
(Ch. 6 - Journaling Prayers) 1. What would you write down in a spiritual journal? Why would you keep one? 4. What will be the result of our meditations? 1 Timothy 4:15 tells us.
The first question I listed, on Proverbs, is about as thought-provoking as you'll find here. It's not a bad question -- it can open up a good discussion -- but most of the book floats closer to the surface. (Again, that may be where you are as you begin to study prayer, so please don't take offense! But with the word "Adventurous" in the title, I was expecting to be taken a bit deeper.)
The last question I listed, from 1 Timothy, represents the format of many questions in this book: the question comes with the answer attached, which is so common in women's guides, I find. Much of the "work" in this book is just writing verses down in the blanks.
It's a lighter book, to be sure, but time spent in prayer and in the Word is never wasted. I will think twice about doing another title from this series, though! | | | Write your own review about Adventurous Prayer
