defending the garden from, say, Big Bully Croaker. But when some foreign
ants move into the garden, their strange ways challenge Antonio to use
something other than physical strength and military experience to solve a
problem. Featuring Tim Conway as Hermie and special guest-star Fred Willard
("Wall-E", "Kim Possible", "Chicken Little", etc) and includes the original
song "How Could Anyone Not Love Me" and the cartoon short
"Caterpilla" (a spoof of Cinderella). Lesson is based on Luke 10:27
"Love your neighbor as you love yourself." (ICB)

My kids really enjoy this movie and have watched it a few times already (it's a little young for my 11 and 9 year old but my 5 and 4 year old love it). I decided to interview my five-year-old, Cian, for this review:
Did you like this movie?
Yes, mam.
What happened in the movie?
The ants got into a fight because they didn't want to live together.
What was your favorite part of the movie?
Talking to God and my favorite part was the loving your neighbor.
What did you learn from this movie?
I learned that you talk to God, pray, love your neighbors and ... that's all.
That was all I could get out of him before he took off out the door to play. But I think his answers speak very highly of this movie and it's message!

When I started reviewing `books' for Thomas Nelson, I never imagined getting to watch one of my favorite Caterpillars... Hermie (and his friend Wormie). If you haven't checked out Max Lucado's Hermie series, you're missing out.
"Antonio Meets His Match" was no different. Another brilliant storyline, matched with cute characters and practical application for kids of all ages.
I actually gave my kiddos the assignment to watch this DVD and write a review. Here are some things they had to say:
"I liked this movie because it reminded me to be nice to others and love my neighbor as myself."
"The ants weren't being very nice. They were being greedy. I'm glad they became friends in the end."
"This was a good movie and every kid should see it."

In Antonio Meets His Match we meet Antonio and his friends who live together in a garden. They all get along well until a new group of ants moves to the garden. They are rude and play weird music. Antonio really doesn't like these new neighbors and the new neighbors are unkind to Antonio. Antonio learns that even though the other ants are unkind, he needs to learn to love his neighbors.
The cartoon portions of this DVD are adorable and my children love the characters. They learn a wonderful message in a fun, and entertaining way. The one part of the DVD that felt forced and awkward were the segments where Max Lucado and Hermie discuss loving our neighbors. These segments just felt uncomfortable. While I enjoy Mr Lucado's books and the cartoon on the DVD, he is a bit awkward on film. Having said that, this DVD is great for kids! The story is cute and they learn a wonderful message!

In "Antonio Meets his Match", the latest installment in Max Lucado's "Hermie" series, Antonio a brave little ant, gets some new neighbors. These new ants are so different from Antonio and his friends. Not only are the "different", but they're also annoying and rude to the others. But instead of fighting back, God instructs Antonio to "love his neighbors".
At first, Antonio rises to the occasion. But then a little plot twist comes along and the gloves come off!
This was my first Hermie experience. And while my children are well above the target age range, I do feel that this is a really cute video with a positive message for young children. Loving your neighbor as yourself is a hard thing to do--whether you're an adult or kid! I would recommend this product to anyone with a child from 2-7 yrs of age. In addition, the bonus material (Trivia Game and Sing-A-Long) would be perfect for Sunday School classes.
A word of caution however: Some families may take offense to the words such as "dumb" and "annoying" used to describe the ants throughout the video.

Antonio Meets His Match is about the important lesson of loving your neighbor, even when it is difficult to do so. When new ants move into the garden and make life a little difficult for the garden, Antonio is tasked by the other insects to kick the new ants out of the garden. God then speaks to Antonio and challenges him to "love your neighbor". Through out the rest of the DVD you see how Antonio and the other garden insects are tasked with loving their neighbors even when they are "annoying".
My daughter and I really liked the colorful and detailed animation of the video. I liked the introduction and conclusion by Max Lucado and thought that an excellent message was trying to be conveyed. I liked how the characters prayed to God with reverence and respect. My daughter also enjoyed several of the bonus features on the DVD.
Even though there are several positives about the DVD, I feel that there are several negative points as well that I would be remiss if I did not share. We support and encourage a diverse household and I was offended by the way that Angus and his friends were portrayed. Obviously Irish, they made fun of their kilts and bagpipe playing though out the episode. Antonio was also hit several times in the head by the golf ball, and while loving your neighbor is extremely important, promoting non violent activities to young children also is. In our household we are very aware of the vocabulary used around our daughter. Annoying, and dumb, two words not promoted in our household were used.
In all, Sophie liked it, but I as much as I wanted to like it, I did not. I think it will be donated in the next book/video sale for the local library.
