Publishers Description
Mary Ellis follows her captivating "Widow's Hope" with a new story from the heart of Holmes County, Ohio. In "Never Far From Home," fifteen-year-old Emma Miller finishes school, starts her own wool business, and is longing for someone to court. When the object of her affection is a handsome English sheep farmer, with a fast truck and modern methods, her deacon father, Simon, knows he has more than the farm alliance to worry about. Emma isn't the only one with longings in Holmes County. Her aunt Hannah wants a baby and her uncle Seth hopes he'll reap financial rewards when he takes a risk with his harvest. But are these the dreams God has for this Amish family? With engaging interactions and thoughtful characters, Ellis weaves a story about waiting for God's timing and discovering that the dreams planted close to home can grow a lasting harvest of hope and love.

 | Wonderful Read Jun 2, 2010 |
Emma Miller is a young Amish girl who has finished school. While she still has her chores to do, she also has her own wool business. Emma works hard as she knows her mom needs to have surgery. The Amish community relies on a central fund which they all donate money too in case someone needs medical help. On a buggy ride to town to sell her wool along with her Aunt Hannah, Emma meets a young English sheep farmer named James. She finds him nice and is attracted to him, and he finds her attractive. After seeing him twice she decides on her 16th birthday to announces to her family she wants to take her full Rumspringe. That is where things become hard for her as they fall in love with each other. She loves being Old Amish and can't imagine a life not being Amish. Yet James is English and heading off for two years of college. He tells Emma to wait and he will find a way for them to be together. But can young love endure all the challenges? Can James really find a way for them to marry someday? I would recommend this book to all who love reading about the Amish. Also for new readers who have never read Amish fiction.

Emma Miller is a young Amish girl turning sweet sixteen. At her birthday party she shocks her family by announcing she want to take her full Rumspringa. This is the time Amish boys and girls are allowed to experience the English (or Englischer as they are called) world before being baptized into the faith. Emma is a hard working young teenager with her own wool business. She sells her products to Mrs. Dunn who owns the "Stitch In Time" boutique. Emma has met James Davis Jr, a young Englischer farmer who often makes deliveries to the boutique. She has feelings for James, and feels guilty: the worlds of the Amish and Englischers are too far apart. Her father, would never approve of her courting James.
Emma is very close to her Aunt Hannah who recently married her Uncle Seth. They are both raising lambs, both are in the wool business, both selling their products to Mrs. Dunn. She longs to talk with Hanna about James, but doesn't want to put her in the middle. Emma's father is "Old World" Amish and a deacon. When he learns of her associated with James from an Amish harness maker, he is really upset and forbids her to see him. He cannot understand why his daughter would want to associate with an Englischer, let alone have feelings for him. This goes against all he believes in. There are several good Amish young men she can court when it is time.
Readers will enjoy living Emma's daily life as she agonizes over her feelings for James, the desire to obey her parents, her God, and not to bring shame to her family. You will cry, laugh and rejoice with the family as they cope with the debilitating illness of her mother, Emma's long recovery from a terrible accident involving her buggy and a truck. Does she reconcile her problems with her father? Does Emma leave her faith and become English or does James convert to Amish? Talk with the family as they live their daily lives. Hanna prays for a baby, Emma's mother prays for relief from her illness, and Emma prays for guidance and understanding. Is James the one person God has planned for her? Can she truly wait for God's timing and accept his will?
Ms. Ellis is an excellent writer of romance fiction. She seems to have a firm understanding of the Amish' beliefs and their way of life. Highly recommend for all readers.
This book was provided by the publisher as a review copy. | | | | This is a great Amish romance! Apr 11, 2010 |
Emma Miller was at the turning point of her life. Soon it would be her sixteenth birthday. Emma makes wreaths and dyes wool. Through her business, she meets an Englishman, James Davis. The two form a strong friendship, one that would not meet her parent's approval.
When an Amish girl turns sixteen, she leaves her childhood behind and enters the adult world. They are allowed a time called Rumschpringe, it is an opportunity to experience either the worldly way of life or to stay with the order.
Emma's father is a deacon in the church. He is torn between keeping his daughter at home or allowing her to go out and make her own decisions. Emma's Aunt Hannah is a newlywed to a widower. He has a young child. She is learning to be submissive to her husband and she longs for a child of her own.
This is Book 2 in the Miller Family Series. This book stands well alone. The author has a well developed plot and the characters are likable. There is a main plot and a subplot. The two work well together. Both plots concern making decisions. This is a great Amish romance! | | | | Hold On To Your Bonnet, More Amish Fiction Mar 20, 2010 |
Emma Miller is restless. She's torn between the life she's always known and the life she's never experienced. Growing up Amish, Emma hasn't had much contact with the outside world until she begins selling her handmade goods and spun wool to a local shop. When she meets a handsome young Englisher, she's face with a decision between following her restless heart and honoring her parents and the Amish tradition.
In Never Far From Home, Mary Ellis tells Emma's touching story of love and faith. I enjoyed the book and Mary Ellis is a talented author. Those who love Amish fiction are going to love this book; however, those who are looking for something that sets this series apart from other Amish fiction aren't going to find it. It's the classic story of an Amish girl struggling between keeping her faith and getting baptized and leaving home to face shunning. How Emma Miller works out her dilemma is slightly different from some other stories, but it's a little too convenient if you ask me. I won't be a spoiler and give away the details. However it's still the same Amish fiction plot.
I was a little surprised by some of the modern conveniences that these Amish folks have. A little explanation would have helped since the Amish in my area don't have refrigerators in their kitchens; outside in a little shed, yes, but inside no.
I know there are heaps of readers out there who can't get enough bonnet fiction, so I know this book will be wildly popular in those circles. I'd give the author 5 stars for writing skills and 3 stars for originality.
Note: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Mary Ellis' publicist for review purposes.
