Overview
Despite worldly success, many people search futilely for meaningful lives. Celebrities attempt suicide. Religious leaders admit spiritual emptiness. What is missing from lives that seem perfect?but are actually hollow at the core? Anne Graham Lotz says the answer is intimately knowing God as Abraham did?and being known by Him?as His friend.

Publishers Description
God longs to call you friend. Are you missing the essentials to living a joyful, purpose-filled life? Are you devoted to your church or your religion but still struggling to find meaning and passion in your faith? Do you love your family, work hard, contribute to your community, but still feel your life is somehow incomplete and hollow at the core? Are you restless in your spirit, with a nagging sense that there must be something more? Gifted Bible teacher Anne Graham Lotz, daughter of evangelist Billy Graham, has known this struggle herself. As she studied Scripture looking for a way out of the emptiness, she found her answer in the amazing story of Abraham, a very ordinary man who became extraordinary for one pivotal reason: he pursued God in a life of obedient faith, not knowing where that decision would take him. Despite struggling, as we do, with compromise, fear, family, quarrels, failure, doubt, and disappointment, Abraham became a man God called His friend.Anne followed Abraham's lead and began a lifelong pursuit of knowing God, as he truly is, in an intensely personal relationship. Through personal anecdotes, unforgettable stories, and God-inspired insights, she invites you to draw closer to God, who is as committed to you as he was to Abraham and longs to call you friend.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
I was a bit disappointed  Apr 9, 2010
I was really looking forward to reading this book. Her background and things I have read about her really intrigued me. But I am having a tough time getting through it.

My first disappointment was when I saw who wrote the forward. The only reason I can see why was simply to boost sales from his flock. I was also turned off by the pages of praise and the cover of the book. But that may not be a reflection of Anne Lotz but the publisher.

While the book does follow Abraham's life it also is weighted down with a lot of extra. It basically flows like this: A bit about Abraham, a few modern day questions of what he may have been thinking, a bit of Anne's life in relation, and a few questions for the reader. While I enjoyed her description of Abraham's life, I can do a pretty good job of wondering what he was up to and thinking. It is interesting to know about her personal life and how reading about Abraham has affected her. But again, I can reflect how it affects my life.

I was also a bit turned off and surprised by her attitude at times. She sounded a bit snobbish talking about an "evil", "celebrity" couple on an airplane. And when she tries to "witness" to them she wonders if they will ever get it. That's not the attitude I understand we are to have from reading the Bible. I have a lot of respect for her and her family but I don't think it sets the right tone.

I found this book to be more of a self-help book than any kind of Christian study. This book is far better then any TV evangelist ever wrote, but I think the 250 pages or so could have been cut way back if she focused more on Abraham's life and a bit about how it has affected her. If you prefer reading books over the Bible I do recommend this one. But I think we can get more out of reading the Bible ourselves. It is an amazing book.

confession  Mar 25, 2010
I have a confession: I struggled get through this book. But, for me, that says as much about it as anything. I like this sort of Christian book and thought I would really like this one. I have no one major complaint, it just wasn't engaging to me at all. Perhaps it soumds a little unfair to write a review based on such a tepid reaction, but I think having a few of those to balance the high star reviews who love it really may give a more complete picture for potential readers.

Lotz looks at the life of Abraham to see what it can tell us about how we can be guided by and committed to God in our own lives. This book really encourages believers to follow God completely. It's an important challenge, and one I need to be called back to often, and books can be a good way to do that. However, I just can't say that The Magnificent Obsession was inspirational to me in that regard. I think the reason may be that the observations about Abraham just didn't translate well into concrete changes in my life.

On the other hand, I agree with the message. I wouldn't steer anyone away from it, and clearly because of other good reviews it DID hit home with most of its readers. It's just that there are so many more book in its genre that have had so much more impact on me, I can't personally recommend it very highly.

This book did not hold my attention  Mar 7, 2010
I'm sure for many truly seeking to learn more about Abraham and how his life can be a lesson to us in our walk with God, this will be a good book.

For me I just wasn't that interested in the subject matter and did not finish the book.

The author seemed to write well I just didn't have much desire to read nearly 300 pages about Abraham anymore than I would reading about Moses, Thomas Jefferson, or Dolley Madison.

Wonderful book  Feb 14, 2010
Anne Graham Lotz presents readers with a study of Abraham's life. The text is based on Genesis 12-24. It was easy to personalize this account. Abraham was told by God to leave his home. Lot seemed to prosper at times, but never followed the Lord. In the end, it was costly to his family and others. Time and again Abraham would jump ahead and do things his way, not waiting on God. He made many mistakes, but always turned back to the Lord. Lotz shares stories of her life and struggles.

Lotz was honest concerning her walk with the Lord. She shares her mistakes, as well as her successes. If you've tried doing it on our own, if you are impatient or if you've told a little lie, you are very human and this book is for you.

This book will make a great individual or small group study.

Magnificent Obsession by Anne Graham Lotz  Feb 13, 2010
Anne Graham Lotz is one of my favorite authors. She is a rare and beautiful find in today's Christian culture. Most Christian authors would tell you that they are writing books that point to Jesus, but most of them are a type of self-help Christianity. If all we learn is that the Bible is about us and how we live, we have nothing to offer others. Anne gives us a beautiful glimpse at Jesus in the life of Abraham. I could tell you a million comments on each section of this book, but I just want you to know that I loved it. I want you to read it. I have seen the glory of a father willing to sacrifice his own son. I have drunk deep as I watched the father send his servant to carefully select a bride for his son. I love seeing the rich beautiful tale of Jesus Christ and the lengths he goes to in order to protect the bride and get her to the son wrapped so intricately in the pages of Genesis. Beloved bride, fall into this poetic tale and live it out.
