Item Description...

Overview
Part 1 focuses on Jesus' words in everyday contexts - his teachings to the crowds, the stories he told, his conversations with his disciples. Part 2 shifts the focus to Jesus' prayers - the words he spoke to God the Father.

Peterson's Tell It Slant promises to deepen our understanding of Jesus' words, strengthen our awareness of language as a gift of God, and nurture our efforts to make all of our speech convey a blessing to others.

"Language - given to us to glorify God, to receive the revelation of God, to witness to the truth of God, to offer praise to God - is constantly at risk. Too often the living word is desiccated into propositional cadavers, then sorted into exegetical specimens in bottles of formaldehyde. We end up with godtalk. . . . My concern is that we use God's gift of language in consonance with the God who speaks. Jesus is the primary person with whom we have to do in this business. Jesus most of all. Jesus, the Word made flesh. . . . I want to nurture an awareness of the sanctity of words, the holy gift of language whether it is directed vertically or horizontally. Just as Jesus did."- from the introduction

Publishers Description
Just as God used words both to create the world and to give us commandments, we too use words for many different purposes. In fact, we use the same language to talk to each other and to talk to God. Can our everyday speech, then, be just as important as the words and prayers we hear from the pulpit? Eugene Peterson unequivocally says "Yes " // Tell It Slant explores how Jesus used language - he was earthy, not abstract; metaphorical, not dogmatic. His was not a direct language of information or instruction but an indirect, oblique language requiring a participating imagination - "slant" language. In order to witness and teach accurately in Jesus' name, then, it is important for us to use language the way he did. // Part 1 focuses on Jesus' words in everyday contexts - his teachings to the crowds, the stories he told, his conversations with his disciples. Be Prepared to Be Touched and Changed  May 8, 2010
You cannot read anything by Eugene Peterson and not be touched and changed by your reading. Especially, applying his teaching on "spiritual reading" to his other works. Of the books in this series, THIS was my favorite. The last section of the book on entering/praying the prayers of Jesus is wonderful and worth the price of the book by itself. As Pastor Peterson unfolded the prayers of Jesus, I could not help but be transported into the various scenarios that occasioned each prayer. Then, I could not help but feel the presence of Christ as He entered my scenarios. It is an amazing exchange, an amazing experience, and one that drives me to want to be a better Christian. I know that, in myself, I cannot be. But, in HIM, I can and will be.

Thank you Pastor Peterson.

Message Bible is fantastic; his other books are not  Dec 19, 2009
I looked through it, and sent it back.
Nowhere near as great as The Message.

Trying to be a Christian today.  Sep 26, 2009
Peterson helps us understand Jesus' parables and how they apply to today's life. He gives fresh, eye-opening insight for living. Along with the companion study guide, this would make a great book for a small group study.

Eugene Peterson is as good as ever.  Aug 23, 2009
In TELL IT SLANT, Eugene Peterson once again has written a book which gives Christians new insights into passages
of scripture which are so familiar that we are numb to their power. He takes from all the many sources he has at his
disposal, including good understanding of Hebrew and Greek, to produce a whole that grabs us, makes us say, "Yes,
I see that now!" What a joy, that a man of great gifts like Peterson uses them so well.

Read this book!  Apr 14, 2009
What a great book! Eugene Peterson is full of so much insight and cultural background. This is not a book for just serious academics, just the opposite, it's for everyone. As someone who has been involved in Christian education and formation I'd recommend this book for everyone.
