Item Description... Overview A Texas-Sized Tale of Unexpected Love Essie Spreckelmeyer is the last woman anyone in Corsicana, Texas, expected to see with a man on her arm. Independent and outspoken, she's known more for riding bicycles in outrageous bloomers than for catching a man's eye. And the last man who seems willing to give her a second glance is Tony Morgan, newly hired at Spreckelmeyer's oil company. The disinherited son of an oil baron, Tony wants most to restore his name and regain his lost fortune--not lose his heart to this headstrong blonde. She confounds, contradicts, and confuses him. Sometimes he doesn't know if she's driving him toward the aisle or the end of his rope. That's how life is...Deep in the Heart of Trouble

 | Now I know why I bothered with the first one!! Oct 16, 2008 |
I bought this book because I had nothing else to read and a long plane ride. I read Courting Trouble. I didn't like it, not one little bit. But I liked Measure of a Lady and decided that there was a 50/50 chance that this would be okay. Besides, it couldn't be any worse than the first book, could it?
Well, I read this awhile ago and can't remember the specifics of it-- that's okay because other reviewers have given the synopsis. All I know is that Essie was redeemed. She had grown up alot and was a completely different woman...sort of. She was still spontaneous, still carefree--perfectly content in her spinsterdom.
She meets her match... all in all a fun read. It was lighthearted without being silly with a dash of intrigue tossed in for good measure. Highly recommeneded. I give courting trouble 1 star on its own but paired up these are between a 4 and a 5. | | | | Slow moving Sep 15, 2008 |
| I thought the book was slow moving and not as good as many others I have read. Would probably not recommend this book to my friends. | | | | Pure Joy to read Sep 4, 2008 |
Reviewed by Bethany L. Canfield for Reader Views (8/08)
What is life worth if you don't get down and dirty? Well, as far as Essie is concerned, life that is not lived is not life at all. She is not content to sit and watch the men do the hard work, or ride bicycles, catch snakes, go fishing or own oil companies. She sets it clear from the start that she is a woman who does not have the need to fit into the social standards of that day. "Deep in the Heart of Trouble" is a historical romance novel that engaged me and kept me wanting more the whole way through. I have actually never read this genre before, but this book was a great introduction into the scene. I enjoyed the writing, simple and straightforward, not flowery and over-dramatic at all. I felt the pace was speedier than expected in a historical romance novel.
Deeanne Gist does an excellent job with character development; each character becomes alive and feels like a whole person, not just a made-up, one-dimensional book being. Through the character development the reader is brought to trust, hope and enjoy each person described, filling the pages of "Deep in the Heart of Trouble" with an honesty and sensitivity that will not be forgotten.
Life, morality, trust and integrity are traits that shine through the entire book. It is easy to be captivated by their luster. It is fully enjoyable to read a book that does not threaten my moral standpoints over and over. I wish there were more books out there like this, creative and captivating because of the writing and characters, and not the steamy sex scenes and over-extended violence. "Deep in the Heart of Trouble" by Deanne Gist was pure joy to read, it really was.
| | | | Deep in the heart of boredom!! Aug 27, 2008 |
I read this book based on the online reviews I saw for it, and though, hey, as the song says '50 million Elvis fans can't be wrong'....in this case Deanne Gist fans...but boy was I wrong.
I really liked the charachter of Essie. Spunky, defying traditions, independant and fun...she seemed like someone I'd like to meet. The other charachters in the book were all cartoons in a live-action movie. I had a hard time doing more than liking Tony, whose motivations seemed pure and good, but whose personality had as much oomph as flat ginger ale...no spark, no fire...nothing to recommend him in any way or another.
As to the 'lightening quick' secondary romance invoving Tony's sister, it is improbable and, yet again, she and his mother are nothing more than cardboard cut-outs.
Some secondary charachters including Mrs Lockhart and a young boy named Harley make for some good reading, and help this book avoid a one star rating....
I think I'll avoid Ms. Gist in the future. | | | | Gist continues to be enjoyable Aug 16, 2008 |
| This was a good conclusion to Courting Trouble. Although, I did find myself 1/2 way through the book feeling it hit a lull...Part of me wanted Adam to come back in this book a changed man and fight for Essie...but I'm not disappointed by the new love that enters Essie's life. While I still think Bride Most Begrudging is her best...DITHOT is still a very entertaining read. | | | Write your own review about Bktrax-Disc-Deep/Heart Of Trouble (Abridged) (5CD)
