Publishers Description
Some study Bibles are born simply to be popular. The Master Study Bible was created nearly twenty years ago...simply to be powerful. And now, this standard in authentic Bible study appears again with solid additions to its original cast, redesigned for a new generation and ready to take Bible students deeper than ever. Many students will value the fact that the Master Study Bible keeps the text of Scripture separate from the many study tools. This enables the reader to give clear focus on the Bible text and then go from there to the great variety of tools available within one cover. The Master Study Bible center-column reference system links you to thousands of related passages in the King James text, as well as alternate readings for obscure and difficult-to-translate words. They create a systematic approach to Bible study, allowing the Bible itself to serve as it own best commentary.

 | Well worth the Cost Nov 11, 2008 |
| This is a well-constructed and impressive Study Bible for the price. Beginning with the burgundy padded cover, quality paper (not transparent) and artistic engraved title on the front and side, this Bible has a lot to offer. Over 400 pages in the front and over 600 pages in the back of this Bible have study notes (Encyclopedia and Topical Concordance) plus other Helps, with a two column text that is easy to read (Medium type) and references with translations of certain words (that are accurate by the way!) make this Bible an easy choice for someone who is simply looking for a bargain with lifetime reading material. Notes are current. There are no study notes at the bottom of the pages of this Bible. This Study Bible is text only with center references and some translation of words in the center column. In some ways this adds to emphasis on the text with less distraction to read notes at the bottom of the page. A sturdy, current and solid investment for Bible study. | | | | Best Study Bible on the market!! Sep 21, 2008 |
| This study bible is the best I have ever used. Don't be misled by other reviewers who give this excellent study bible a bad rating. This bible gives you exactly what you need to learn the Word of God. It comes with a concordance, encyclopedia, study helps and of course the beautiful King James Version of the bible. If your serious about studying your bible, this is the one you should buy. | | | | Great Bible - text layout is the only drawback. Dec 29, 2007 |
My comments below speak to the strengths of this particular Study Bible. The only real drawback is the text layout. It contains no headings or sub-headings, even at chapter breaks. The layout is two-columnt and each page is filled with two continuous running text - even at chapter breaks. The chapter numbers themselves are large, allowing the reader to spot the beginning of new chapters. The text layout is by verse and not paragraph. Mind you, while I note these as the only drawbacks, some readers may see them as strengths. The text layout is probably more akin to the orignal text layout, which lacked verse and chapter divisions. And they certainly did not have subject headings and sub-headings. With that beig said, I believe modern advances in text layout really do assist the reader and make reading easier on the eyes. In my opinion, if they would add these features to this particular Study Bible, it would be one of the best for inductive study. It is just difficult to look at continuous flowing text, page after page ... it makes you feel like you are not sure where you are at. The margins are also narrow, less than a 1/2 inch, which only contributes to the "cramped" feeling of the text on the page.
Regarding the inclusion of "biased" articles (noted by another reviewer) in the Encyclopedia section, do not be mislead. The Encyclopedic section of this Bible is one of the most noteworthy study helps in this Bible, bar none. It comprises 534 pages of excellent articles, many of them comparable to those found in decent Bible dictionaries. To have this encyclopedic wealth at your fingertips in the back of your leather Bible is of inestimable value. This encyclopedia also includes articles on every book in the Bible, which is where you will find more in depth introduction and analysis of the biblical books themselves.
I also like the very brief introductions to each Bible book that acually precede the biblical text itself. The format is the same for each Bible book: "Life's Questions" - followed by three questions related to the content of the book, but written in the first person to faciliate personal relevance and application. These three questions is then followed by: "God's Answers" - followed by a brief introduction that answers the "Life's Questions" in the context of the book you are about to read. It is a great way to prepare the reader mentally for what they are about to read in the ensuing book.
This Bible also contains more study helps related to the Lord Jesus Christ than most study Bibles. It contains all of your standard helps, like listings of our Lord's Miracles and Parables, as well as a Harmony of His life. But it also contains a narrative titled, "A Brief Life Of Christ" - which follows immediately after the Encyclopedia. This is an excellent narrative survey of the life of Christ, divided into chapters according to the major divisions of His ministry - complete with sub-headings and the respective scripture references underneath each sub-heading. After this Brief Life Of Christ follows the "Cornerstone Study Helps". It contains in this order, "Who Is Jesus," "Titles Of Jesus," "The Gospel Message," The Teachings Of Jesus," (which is like a mini topical index with scripture references), "Jesus And The Ten Commandments," (which includes references to the Passage, Related Old Testament Passages, Related New Testament Passages, and Jesus' Teachings), "Messianic Prophecies Of The Old Testament," "A Harmony Of The Gospels," "Parables Of Jesus (which includes an analysis of each parable that includes: Occasion, Lesson Taught, and References), "Discourses Of Jesus" (which includes an analysis of each Discourse that includes: Where Delivered, Nature of Style, To Whom Addressed, and References), "Predictions Made By Jesus" (in table format with: The Event, Prediction References in Matthew, Mark, Luke, and/or John, and Fulfillment references), "Prophecies Of Jesus' Second Coming", "Daily Bread - Being A Calendar For Reading Through The Word Of God In A Year" (including a discussion of the Advantages and Directions to get the most out of your readings, relative to you as an individual and to your family), and finally the "Concordance".
This summarizes the helps at the back of the Bible - not to mention the 400+ page "Cornerstone Topical Concordance" in the front of the Bible. This is a very valuable study Bible with a wealth of study helps compared to that found in most study Bibles. Think of it: the Topical Concordance (front) and Encyclopedia Of Bible Knowledge (back) together comprise nearly a thousand (1,000) pages. The more time I spend with this study Bible, the more I realize what it really has to offer - the tools to really dig into your study of God's Word. Enjoy. | | | | Wonderful Study Tool - My Favorite Bible of Many Jan 13, 2005 |
I first purchased this bible about 20 years ago, at the prompting of a bible scholar. I've never regretted it. In fact, it's my favorite bible to take to study, teach or minister from, not to mention, just sit in bed at night and read over and over again. After 20 years I still find tools in Holman Master Study Bible that amazes me. I've read a newer version is out and I'm planning to add another of the same bible to my collection of tools. Whether you're a beginner, seminary student or just love to dig into Gods work and know with authority you have a bible that is full of tools to teach your or clarify scripture, this is one of the best out there.
In conclusion, I must add, the next one will be without indexes. After about 15 years I've found tabs about the house, which is not a complaint at all. The leather is worth the additional cost. Don't skimp on leather. Go first class and it will last many years as mine has. I'll go with non indexed version this time.
Grace and Peace be with you,
Paul
| | | | Not what it used to be.... Nov 18, 2004 |
I purchased my first Master Study Bible ten years ago when it was available in the NASB translation. Well, that one had seen much use and it was time to get a new one, and upgrade from a hardcover to a leather edition. Lo and behold, I search and discover that the MSB has been updated by the publisher, but this time it's only available in the KJV. No matter, I thought. I purchased it anyway and it came in the mail the next week, but it was a major disapointment.
My older MSB was useful because of the extensive book introductions and outlines, the words of Christ in red, the concordance, encyclopedia, cross-references, maps, scholarly articles, and study aids on the ministry of Jesus and the Old Testament Timelines.
This new edition has NO book outlines, minimal introductions (a mere shadow of the former), and NO scholarly articles or Old Testament timelines. The MSB went from being a useful tool for teachers and students of scripture to little more than a devotional reading bible. Sad, indeed, becuase in the past, what made the MSB so helpful was that it had more tools than any mere reference bible would have had, but not so many extras that one would have been distracted in any attempt to read the word of God (when more in depth study is necessary, I am the type of bible student who benefits more from a separate commentary on the bible than the extensive study notes of a bible like Zondervan's NIV Study Bible).
If you need a good bible for personal study but need more than a mere reference edition and less than a full-blown "study edition," the older MSB would have been your book of choice. Now, our choices are limited. I returned my "new" MSB, and replaced my older one instead with a KJV Open Bible from Thomas Nelson publishers (ISBN 0718002083)--now that's a bible worth considering! | | | Write your own review about KJV Cornerstone Master Study-Burgundy HC Indexed S/S
