Great bible to read thru first time or for kids.  Sep 4, 2008
This bible may not be for serious study. As some other reviews point out there are some flaws with being gender neutral, even if in parts. However, this bible is intended to read easily allowed. Which it does a very good job. It is also intended to be faithful to the original meaning. Which overall it does a great job for the average bible reader. If you are in seminary you will use the KJV and original language versions for study. However, this bible should be considered for the average Christian, child or anyone new to the bible. For more serious study consider adding a KJV to your library. Only the KJV version is based on the Textus Receptus (Latin: "received text") . All new versions leave out some verses which make that particular verse or thought (concept) difficult to understand. For example check Mark 11:26 'But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses.' Which is dropped in CEV and most all new translations. For a more complete list check Chick Publications, chick dot com or other online references. Again, overall this is a great bible to read and get a very good understanding of the bible old and new testament.

Nice Intentions, But Notable Flaws  Jul 31, 2008
As someone who works in a church, I have studied most of the different Bibles. The 2 I use most are the 1976 "Good News" and the 1952 "Revised Standard." I have respect for the "Living," the "New American," the "New English," the "King James," the "New King James," the "English Standard Version," the "Holman Christian Standard," and the 1941 revision of the "Douay Rheims." I don't like the NIV. The translators of the subject at hand had the good intentions of creating a Bible that was understandable by people who didn't have large vocabularies. They also wanted to make a translation that was pleasant to listen to. An especially good passage here is that "You shall not commit adultery" ("Exodus" 20:14 RSV) becomes "Be faithful in marriage" ("Exodus" 20:14 CEV). Another really well put passage is: "What will you gain if you own the whole world but destroy yourself?" ("Matthew" 6:26). There are some translations I question, but what this version suffers the most from is trying to be overly gender inclusive and politically correct. This Bible is so GI it's not only annoying, it is inaccurate. A major example is when Jesus asks the Jewish authorities where John's right to baptize came from: "...the people think that John was a prophet, and that's why we can't say that it was some human being who gave John the right to baptize" ("Matthew" 21:26). The reality is that women did not give or carry authority in this culture. You can NOT change history to make it P.C. Another major problem here is that anyone who persecutes Christ or the apostles has to be called 'they.' This is preposterous. Part of knowing Christianity is understanding why Christ clashed with the Jewish authorities , the majority of Israel's populations, and why. Because of the overly GI and PC traits of the C.E.V., I can not suggest it. If you want a beginner friendly Bible, go with the 1976 "Good News." If you want an accurate version, go with the 1952 "Revised Standard."

Holy Bible: CEV a good translation  May 30, 2008
This is an inexpensive, good Holy Bible. It is a translation (as opposed to a paraphrase), and it is very readable. This paperback or a hardback version is a must in every library. Just keep the dust off of it, the preacher might drop by.

Get This One!  May 29, 2008
After looking at several bibles in Kindle's Store, this one stood out for its readability and faithfulness to the ancient and recent manuscripts. There are abundant footnotes that are easily accessed. Additionally, the individual chapters can easily be accessed by using the Search feature; e.g. "5 Isaiah" for Isaiah, the fifth chapter. Check it out!

Pleasantly Surprise !  Jun 27, 2007
This was the first time I had gone online and ordered anything. The book was for my son-in-law in jail. He really likes the bible alot, since he would not be given a bible. It got to him BEFORE the time mentioned. I am very impressed with your service and plan to order more books & misc. Thank you for your fast, speedy, and accurate service.....
